LATE TO SCHOOL FOOD POLICY

Applicability All EMUHSD Campuses
Effective Status Active / Enforced

In order to support a safe, focused, and distraction-free learning environment, the El Monte Union High School District enforces the following rules regarding outside foods brought onto campus by late students:

1. Commercial Food Restriction

Students who arrive late to school are strictly prohibited from bringing outside commercial fast food, delivery items, soft drinks, or specialized beverages (e.g., Starbucks, fast-food meal packages) into the school gates.

2. Delivery Protocols

Third-party food delivery services (including but not limited to DoorDash, UberEats, Grubhub, and Postmates) are not permitted to deliver meals to students at any point during the instructional day. Any delivery drivers will be turned away at campus check-points.

3. Storage & Confiscation

Any student checking in late with commercial outside food will be required to leave the food items at the Attendance or Front Office. These items may be claimed by the student only after the final school bell.

4. Approved Alternatives

Students have full access to a variety of nutritional breakfast and lunch menus daily at the school cafeteria. Traditional home-prepared cold lunches packed inside standard reusable lunchboxes prior to arriving are permitted.

5. Policy Objectives

This policy minimizes structural classroom interruptions, guarantees equity for students accessing the meal programs, manages campus safety vectors, and supports the District's commitment to federal nutritional health guidelines.

Did you know that school attendance is the leading indicator of your child’s lifelong success?

Attendance Tips

Communicate with the school: If your child experiences challenges that affect their attendance, please reach out to the school for support and resources. We are your partner and here to help you however we can.

Encourage a love of learning: Foster a positive attitude towards school and learning by engaging in educational activities with your child at home.  If there are areas where your child’s school or academic experience can improve, we encourage you to speak with your school principal or educator.

Establish a consistent routine: Ensure your child gets enough sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and has ample time to prepare for school each morning.  If you need help with providing meals for your child or are in need of transportation, please contact your child’s principal.

Schedule appointments outside of school hours: Whenever possible, schedule doctor's appointments, dental check-ups, and other appointments during non-school hours.  Even missing a half day of school for an appointment can be disruptive to your child’s academic experience.
